Edgar 'Ed' Gamble ~ 1923 – 2016
Ed's lifelong passion was cars, an avid race car fan, he helped out at the track on weekends, attending NASCAR races. Ed's later years were spent restoring wrecked automobiles to like new condition. Ed, was a Normandy war hero, who served in the 9th Air Force, 819th Aviation Engineers. He returned home wounded from the war, but went on to build a life in Huntsville with his wife and three children.
On December 14th 1966, Ed purchased this beautiful 2dr Spt Coupe from Hill Chevrolet Company in Huntsville, for the sum of $4548.60
The Impala was a surprise Christmas present for his beloved wife Sara, he lovingly wrapped a large red bow around the car. Edgars family have very fond memories of that Christmas...they were delighted to share their story and to discover that their Mothers car was still around...just now on the other side of the Atlantic!
Sadly Sara passed away in 1975 and Ed lovingly took care of the Impala, keeping it garaged and maintained, as a tribute to his late wife. He was very reluctant to part with it and took some persuading to do so. Ed eventually sold the Impala to a family friend, John L Kirby.
In 2015 Ed received a letter in the mail from a stranger in France who had found something amazing, his original dog tags on Normandy beach!
Ed said when he was on the Normandy beach all those years ago, he had one thing on his mind: "You did what you had to do to go home."
Incredibly... a little piece he left behind, had now also found its way home too!
Edgar passed away December 5th 2016
John L Kirby also from Huntsville, Alabama, took just as good care of the Impala, keeping it mainly on the drive or under cover.
On 8th August 2016 John sold the Impala to Charlie Van Valkenburgh, a local businessman. Charlie is the president of Pit Bull Products, a motorcycle accessories company that he started years ago, after designing parts for the International Space Station for Boeing. Charlie rides motorcycles and turned his hobby into a career, quitting his day job to be his own boss selling his invention around the world. In 2012 he rode one of his motorcycles nearly 200 miles an hour in the Utah salt flats to set a speed record. Pit Bull Products, celebrates 25+ years of providing high-quality, American-made products for sport bikes. Look for the stand with the distinctive look of a Pit Bull, Stocky and undeniably tough! Pit Bull Products Inc. now sells 10,000 to 15,000 stands a year to riders around the world. Charlie loved the Impala, refitting her interior, replacing mechanical parts, and bringing her up to date whilst keeping her still 'original'
In 2019 Charlie sold the Impala.
And Her journey to the United Kingdom began.
Golden Chariots Imports ltd transported her from Alabama to Southampton UK, where she arrived in March 2019 and her life as The Dark Huntress was born!
